Description
Craig Taborn's Avenging Angel album was widely praised for the fresh ideas it brought to the solo piano idiom. "It reflects Mr Taborn's galactically-broad interests," said the New York Times, "along with his multifaceted technique," while the Guardian saluted Craig's "genius (there is no other word for it) and his "world of whispered, wide-spaced figures, ringing overtones, evaporating echoes and glowering contrapuntal cascades".
Over the last decade Taborn has continued to refine and develop his approach, reaching new high ground with Shadow Plays, a stunning live recital from Vienna's Konzerthaus. In this fully improvised concert, recorded in March 2020, Craig explores sounds and silences, swirling colours, densities and forms, creating new music in the moment with both poetic imagination and an iron grip on his spontaneously generated material.
Craig Taborn: piano
Press:
"It's an ethereal tour de force. Across seven pieces, tart phrases are expanded on through insistent repetition; meandering lines look anxiously for a direction; the left and right hand do call and respond, but then agree to differ. Sometimes he gives the impression of playing backwards. It's sonic poetry in its purest form." - ***** BBC Music Magazine
"It finds the Detroit-born pianist delivering spontaneous masterworks with a majestic sense of form and captures his robust touch and uncanny sense of space in pristine sound." - **** Financial Times
"Despite the excellence of his trio work solo piano is a format in which Craig Taborn has thrived in what is turning out to be an illustrious career. 2011's Avenging Angel set the bar yet high and this new offering maintains the sense of invention and challenge the artist poses to himself and listeners...all the stylistic range and deeply personal synthesis of many musical histories conspire to make Craig Taborn a very unique 21st century artist." - **** Jazzwise (Editor's Choice)
"An astonishing live solo recital...On Shadow Plays Craig Taborn confirms the importance of improvisational prowess in the classical and jazz genres. This is a very fine album indeed." - LondonJazz News
