Today Hendrik Andriessen is known above all as a composer of some magnificent organ works. In reality, however, Andriessen was for many decades one of the driving musical forces in the Netherlands, where he was active as a versatile composer and performing musician, a very highly esteemed educator, the author of musical articles and books, and the conservatory director in Utrecht and the Hague during a career culminating in a professorship in musicology at the Catholic University of Nijmegen. We are now releasing his symphonic works in a specially priced box of four CDs. The gripping rhythms and expanded harmonies blended with fully developed melodies clearly attest to Andriessen’s mastery.
