Description
Joseph Haydn's piano trios rank together with his string quartets as the most important and characteristic genre within his chamber music. CPO have now reached the seventh volume of their critically acclaimed complete recording featuring the Trio 1790 on historical instruments. Haydn probably composed the early Pianos Trios Hob. XV:34, 35, 38, 40, and 41 recorded here at the end of the 1750s. It is assumed that he penned his early trios while serving as music director to Count Ferdinand Maximilian Franz Morizin. While the later trios in principle resemble an accompanied piano sonata, the early works are more similar to the late offshoots of the baroque trio sonata. The theme is usually initially presented by the harpsichord alone in the first movements before being repeated by the violin.
