  • Description

We do not know just when it was that the first Danish symphony was written. The main reason for this is the fire that broke out in the Christiansborg Danish Royal Castle in 1794 and destroyed a large part of the source material that would have helped to answer important questions concerning musical practices at the Danish court. However, a few works managed to survive, and cpo is now exploring this very rewarding terrain with the wonderful Concerto Copenhagen, an ensemble led by Lars Ulrik Mortensen. The first discovery was Johann Ernst Hartmann, the founding father of a very important dynasty of composers. One of the two composers on this new CD was one of the many musicians who immigrated to Denmark from Germany, and the other, albeit fifty years later, was a Dane who earned his living as a banker. The German was Ludwig Aemilius Kuntzen and the Dane was Georg Gerson. Both wrote one symphony each, works representing genuinely significant and captivating contributions to the Viennese classical style (of Danish provenance).
