Description
Sound engineer Gerard de Haro of the la Buissonne recording studio had long cherished the idea of bringing together two musicians he had often directed, two musicians who had awakened in him a sense of wonder and awareness of their creative possibilities, but who had never played together before: French bassist Vincent Courtois and American pianist Bill Carrothers. So, Gerard invited both musicians to meet with him and explore ideas for bringing them into studio together, the results of which are on this incredible album 'Firebirds'.
Full of lively and melancholic improvisation, the program alternates between original compositions, jazz standards ("Deep Night" by Charles E Henderson and "Isfahan" by Billy Strayhorn & Duke/Ellington ) a Joni Mitchell classic ("Circle Game"), all of which are framed by two mirrored interpretations of "Agua & Vinho" from Brazilian, Egberto Gismonti. The result is music of dazzling brilliance with subtle and natural interludes. It will undoubtedly become a milestone in Carrothers' and Courtois's respective discographies.
Personnel: Bill Carrothers (piano), Vincent Courtois (cello), Eric Seva (baritone saxophone).
