Description
Spiral is kanun player Sofia Labropoulou's second solo album for Odradek, following 2020's Sisyphus. Across seven tracks she moves inward rather than forward, drawing Hildegard von Bingen, Gyorgy Kurtag, Guy Debord, Emma Goldman, and Iannis Xenakis into orbit around her own compositions, with poetry by Dionysis Kapsalis and a text of her own rooted in Dante's Comedia.The kanun appears here reconfigured and prepared, pushed past its traditional vocabulary; one track is scored for two kanuns, another closes with Yannis Saxonis's modular synthesizer. Each piece has its own visual counterpart in original artwork by Ilias Papailiakis, created exclusively for this release.Recorded at Sierra Studios, Athens, across three sessions in 2024, Spiral is a study in return without repetition -- from a Vienna-based artist and founder of the Unbounded Sounds series.
