Description
A wonderful album from virtuoso violinist Linus Roth of uplifting dances by Bartok, Stravinsky, Piazzolla, Brahms, Wieniawski, Bazzini and Symanowsky, recorded at the visually stunning and acoustically unique Library of the former monastery in Ochsenhausen, Germany.
2020... Sitting at home with no performances ahead brought Linus Roth back to his notebooks, in which he had been jotting down random musical ideas over the course of many years. One of them that suddenly struck him, was an idea for a recording programme made up of some of his most beloved pieces for violin and piano, all of which had in common both a virtuoso character and that they were all dances. What better way to lift the spirits than with dance music? Linus called his long term musical partner, pianist Jose Gallardo and five weeks later, they had the remarkable opportunity to record the album in the visually stunning and acoustically unique Library of the former monastery in Ochsenhausen, Germany, home of the Music Academy of Baden -Wurttemberg.
'[The artists] offer an irresistible interpretation, wonderfully luminous in the most delicate pianissimo as well as in the most powerful fortissimo. Rarely has one heard these dances so glowing and seductive, so differentiated and rich in nuances as here, where the virtuoso is never an end in itself, but serves the sensual and deeply human character of this music, rooted as it is in the people's soul and tradition.' – Pizzicato
'A joyous disc which showcases a wide range of works for violin and piano which are both virtuoso and in dance form' – 5 Stars, Planet Hugill
The German violinist's programme establishes a folksy theme with Bartok's Romanian Dances, leading to arrangements by Kreisler of Brahms's Hungarian Dances and bravura pieces by Wieniawski and Szymanowski. Dushkin's tricky transcription of Stravinsky's Tchaikovsky-based Divertimento, Piazzolla's Grand Tango and Bazzini's sizzling Dance of the Goblins are dispatched here by Roth with thrilling panache." - Sunday Times
