  • Description

Award-winning duo, cellist Doris Hochsheid and pianist Frans van Ruth present enchanting works by Daniel van Goens with natural elegance and breathtaking virtuosity. Their highly-acclaimed Dutch Cello Sonatas Project is a veritable treasure trove of musical rediscoveries and the duo was honoured with the Knight's Cross of the Order of Orange-Nassau for their contribution to Dutch culture.

Their masterful interpretations, presented in the finest 2+2+2 audiophile technology, underscore the outstanding quality of the compositions and are praised by listeners and critics alike: "... unbridles zeal and exemplary precision, ... passionate enthusiasm" (classical.net); "brilliant, sensitive performances" (Fanfare); " ... technically dazzling, totally committed performances of these rare Dutch treats." (Clofo), "The crystal-clear recording technique once again puts the focused interplay of the two musicians, the variety of dynamics and subtleties of phrasing and agogic in the best light" (klassik.com).

Van Goens is often referred to as a 'French composer of Dutch descent' as he wrote and performed for the Parisian salons of the Belle Epoque. Waltzes and tarantellas, scherzos and mazurkas, his charming compositions were perfect encores for the sophisticated parlour audiences of the golden era.

Although still predominantly aristocratic, the era was coming to a close and Van Goens' music reflects this with nostalgic dances such as gavottes, minuets, and a saltarello. They are elegant and refined, and their virtuousity is filled with joie de vivre. In contrast, Berceuse, Op. 46 is an intimate lullaby dedicated to his baby daughter, Gertrude; composed shortly before he died of tuberculosis at the age of 45.
