Description
The new ATMA Classique recording Prokofiev: Sonatas for Flute and Piano with Ariane Brisson, flute, and Philip Chiu, piano highlights qualities that both unite and contrast two great works by Sergey Prokofiev: the Sonata for Flute and Piano in D Major, Op. 94, and the Sonata for Violin and Piano in F Minor, Op. 80.
Both composed during the Second World War, each piece reflects this terrible era of humanity, which unfortunately still resonates today.
Ariane Brisson captivates audiences and critics with the finesse of her playing and the sincerity of her interpretations, seizing every opportunity to surprise and offer her unique voice on the musical scene. Charmed by the fluidity and sensitivity of Ariane's playing, the musicians of the renowned Pentaedre wind quintet invited her to join the ensemble in 2016; she has been its artistic director since 2019. Ariane's reflections on musical interpretation and flute pedagogy led her to complete a doctorate in interpretation at the University of Montreal in 2022.
Pianist Philip Chiu is recognized for his remarkable playing, his listening skills and his inviting stage presence. Winner of the 2023 Juno Award for Classical Album of the Year (Solo Artist) for his album Fables, as well as the first winner of the Goyer Mecenat Musica Award, he has become one of Canada's most prominent musicians, thanks to his contagious love of music.
