The legendary performance of the St. Matthew Passion (the one from Palm Sunday 1939) conducted by the great maestro Willem Mengelberg from the famous Concertgebouw in Amsterdam has been spectacularly restored and will be available as a new edition in digital remix from mid-March 2024. The performance of Bach's 2nd Orchestral Suite (op. 1931) has been added to this edition as a bonus track. Once again, sound engineer Jochem Geene has created a beautiful document after a very intensive and time- consuming restoration The results of this restoration, as well as the previous 2CD with Mahler Sympony no.4 and Tone Poems by Richard Strauss and the Beethoven Symphonies 7&9 and Piano Concerto no.5 with Cor de Groot are simply stunning and further reveal the persuasive power of Willem Mengelberg's spectaculair performances. Of course, the aim of publishing the St. Matthew Passion was also to get as close as possible to the experience of 1939.
