Marianne E. Andersen searched a long time before she found the right composer for her first solo CD. "Morten Gaathaug," she said, "is a Norwegian composer in a class of his own. His musical production is of exceptional quality. It is authentic, straightforward and captivating, and there is always a strong message in his works and selected texts." Gaathaug, at the same time, is happy to have found a genuine interpreter of his music. The title work on this album was written especially for Marianne E. Andersen.
Morten Gaathaug's means of expression are from the tonal tradition. The composer often uses elements from modern rhetoric without losing a classical foothold. A clearly defined romanticist, his works range from colossal exaggerations in Norwegian folk poetry to elegant interpretations of Sigbjørn Obstfelder's sensitive lyricism. At the centre of this recording are the opening cycle "Landskap i måneskinn" ("Moonlit Landscape"), based on texts of Ragnhild Jølsen, and the closing work "Elegiske fragmenter" ("Elegiac Fragments"), which draws on dramatic events during World War Two.
Mezzo-soprano Marianne E. Andersen is in frequent demand as a soloist and has appeared in a long list of opera and concert performances in Norway and abroad. Her warm, golden voice combined with a vibrant ability to communicate always fills audiences with enthusiasm. She possesses a richness of expression and an epic breadth perfectly suitable for this music, which even though within the chamber music format is by no means devoid of drama.
