Description
The eminent jazz guitarist Philip Catherine, who's been at the forefront of the European jazz scene since the 1960s, has returned to the studio for this 2012 recording with a new lineup. His group now includes two young and upcoming musicians on the Belgian scene, pianist Nicola Andrioli and drummer Antoine Pierre.
Catherine turned 70 years old in October 2012 and his playing is better than ever. The music on the album is mostly his own compositions, with some of pianist Andrioli's and the occasional standard. They express a wide range of moods, colours, grooves and emotions with Catherine's lyrical guitar playing, embedded in layers laid down by piano and keyboards and buoyed by lively drums and bass.
He has worked with great artists like Jean Luc Ponty, Larry Coryell, Kenny Drew, Dexter Gordon, Stéphane Grappelli, Charles Mingus and Chet Baker. His unique approach and sound, and the highly emotional lyricism of expression in his playing and in his music, have been important and influential in the development of the jazz guitar.
Personnel: Philip Catherine (guitars), Nicola Andrioli (piano), Philippe Aerts (double bass), Antoine Pierre (drums), Philippe Decock (keyboards), special guest: Isabelle Catherine (vocals on track 5)
