This 2-CD set by the highly-rated piano trio Voces Intimae is dedicated to the music of the French/German composer of the late 19th century Theodore Gouvy. It includes three of his five works for this grouping, the Piano Trios No. 2 opus 18, No. 3 opus 19, and No. 4 opus 22.
The piano trio Voces Intimae's period instrument recording of music by Hummel, released by Warner Classics released in 2006, was a major critical success It was picked as a Critic's Choice for that year on BBC Radio 3. They have also made acclaimed recordings of trios by Franz Schubert and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, as well as a selection of 19th century Fantasias based on the operas of Vincenzo Bellini, all on period instruments. In 2011 they made their debut recording for Challenge Classics of Piano Trios by Schumann.
The fact that the composer Theodore Gouvy was born in an area that historically has frequently changed hands between France and Germany (he only became a French citizen at the age of 32) partly explains his struggle to fame, but it enabled him to develop a unique style. He mixed the solidity, potency and richness of the Romantic German Structure with the inventiveness and cosmopolitan variety of French Music and Culture of the second half of the 19th century. Altogether Gouvy wrote five piano trios and these discs include Nos. 2, 3 and 4.
