  • Description

CACOPHONY was formed in 1986 by guitarists Marty Friedman and Jason Becker and signed to Shrapnel Records, . They released two studio albums 'Speed Metal Symphony' (1987) and 'Go Off!' (1988) and remained active until 1989.

CACOPHONY both albums showcase unique performances of highly technical playing, typical of the 1980s shred era, with songs featuring fast tempos, melodic solos, exotic neoclassical scales and dual guitar harmonizations. Several tracks were entirely instrumental, which prominently demonstrated Marty Friedman and Jason Becker's renowned technical skills.

'Go Off !' is their second and final studio album . Both Marty Friedman and Jason Becker released their own solo albums : 'Dragon's Kiss' and 'Perpetual Burn', respectively in 1988, before the release of 'Go Off!'. Marty Friedman later joined the thrash metal band Megadeth in 1990, remaining with them for nine years as well as releasing several more solo albums, while Jason Becker enjoyed a short stint in David Lee Roth's solo band from 1989 to 1991. Unfortunately, Jason Becker's time with Roth was abruptly cut short due to an onset of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a degenerative disease that rendered him completely unable to play afterwards.

    Sputnickmusic reviewed :
"Their melodic skills improved, and this is evident on tracks such as "E.S.P" and "Black Cat," where the guitar work is atmospheric and adds a new level to the respective songs. One thing that has never been a problem with either guitarist is the feel of their playing, and it comes across as very strong on this album.."
"Overall this album is a step up from their debut Speed Metal Symphony musically and vocally. The guitar work is phenomenal and the drumming is great."

Guitar9 added : " 'Go Off!' features all the scorching solos and double leads you would expect after the Cacophony debut, Speed Metal Symphony, woven into a frame work of superbly crafted vocal songs."

Music book writer Martin Popoff positively reviewed the album and considered it "too crazy, professional and intense for its day", becoming "A cult classic" and ? A mid-years progressive metal cornerstone." and praised drummer Deen Castronovo (Journey, Bad English..) performance as "possibly his chopsiest of a long career. ?

Hubpages concluded : "This album is one of the best in the history of US speed metal and should be enjoyed even by guitar players all over the world."

Having become a much sought after Legendary record, CACOPHONY 'Go Off !' is now available in Digipack Cd and Vinyl with full liner notes !.
