  • Description

Brief Encounter, a 1970's soul band that originated from North Wilkesboro, N.C.
Despite hailing from an area known more for its illustrious history of moonshining, NASCAR legends and bluegrass music, Brief Encounter undoubtedly left their mark on the music industry.
Two hits on the Billboard charts, playing introductions to popular groups and artists like James Brown, K.C. and the Sunshine Band, Sister Sledge, Tavares and Mother’s Finest, a deal with Capitol Records and recording in Muscle Shoals, AL are just a few of their achievements.

Together since high school, Brief Encounter consisted of nine members, including four brothers: Gary Bailey (lead vocals, bass, guitar, keyboards), Montie Bailey (lead vocals, keyboards), Larry Bailey (saxophone, keyboards), Valmar Bailey (keyboards), Maurice Whittington (lead vocals), Rufus Wilborn (drums, flute), Frederick Alexander (drums, percussion), Charles Graham (trumpet), and Michael Carter (guitar). Their first group incarnation was as The Sounds of Soul, which included the Bailey brothers along with Maurice and Rufus. Playing the club scene, they recorded their first record on their own S.O.S. label as The Sounds of Soul. After changing their name to Brief Encounter, they recorded "I'm So Satisfied," which made the national charts and was recorded under the Seventy-Seven Records label.

Other songs recorded under Seventy-Seven Records include "Don't You See I'm Crazy About You, "We're Going To Make It, "Just a Little Notion, "I'm So In Love With You, "Total Satisfaction, and "Human." Although "I'm So Satisfied" gained honorable mention on the national charts, it was their song, "What About Love, recorded under Capitol Records, that was the first to climb the national Billboard charts—reaching all the way to number 85.

The vinyl has proved to be a hot commodity amongst fans!
