Description
Charles Davis is a veteran saxophonist who is better known for his extensive resume as a sideman (Duke Ellington, Dinah Washington, Kenny Dorham, Sun Ra, Elvin Jones, Abdullah Ibrahim, to name just a few) than for the few dates he has done as a leader. Although he plays several members of the reed family, Davis sticks to tenor sax on this session, and reunites him with pianist Barry Harris, bassist Peter Washington, and drummer Ben Riley.
"The session is mostly made up of Davis' originals, kicking things off with the well-named 'Monking', a brisk, dissonant line that implies the spirit of the late pianist. But Monk's 'Reflections', although well played, is erroneously credited to Davis. Two separate takes of 'K.D', a driving hard bop composition prove to be stimulating. Harris contributed the peppy waltz To Duke With Love. Hard bop fans will enjoy this CD." - AllMusic: Ken Dryden
"Davis articulates almost lazily, but his tone has edge, and his lines possess an intelligent fluidity. The combination makes for a tenor style that manages to stand out from the pack. His compositions are memorable and full of life - only two tracks are not Davis originals: Monk's "Reflections" and Barry Harris's "To Duke with Love". Backed by a highly sympathetic band, these tunes take flight. A shiny little gem in the greater sea of jazz. Note: the composition 'K.D' is a tribute to Kenny Durham." - JazzLoser
