Peggie Sampson & Susanne Shapiro
Description
For 50 years Peggie Sampson was a cellist, but in 1960 she purchased a bass viol da gamba while on sabbatical leave. With this purchase, and her belief that the techniques and temperament of the two instruments are not compatible, Samson decided to give up the cello completely. Sampson was naturalized Canadian in 1973 and awarded the Canadian Music Council medal in 1985.
Susanne Shapiro has an international reputation as a concert artist and inspiring teacher. Trained at the Royal Academy of Music, London, and the Julliard School of Music, she has been on the faculties of the University of Indiana at Bloomington and Pepperdine University in Los Angeles and currently teaches at the University of California, Riverside. New Records magazine chose her recording of Haydn's Esterhazy sonatas as one of the best of 1971.
"Orion and Miss Shapiro have come up with one of the new year’s most hauntingly lovely records." - The New Records
“…a clean, nimble technique and a sure sense of style.” – Vineyard Gazette
Personnel: Peggie Sampson (viola da Gamba), Susanne Shapiro (harpsichord)
