Description
Paisean is the first album from the quartet led by saxophonist Ed Jones and pianist Steve Plews. The compositional skills of Plews are on display, he uses the traditional jazz quartet format but as a composer of both jazz and classical music he merges the two styles by the use of samples (all taken from his own recordings), and creates ambient yet intensely dark soundscapes that are lit up by Ed's soaring saxophone lines.
Both Steve Plews and Ed Jones studied at Middlesex University in the 80's and have remained musical friends ever since. Steve trained as a classical pianist but jazz influenced his playing from an early age. He has developed the twin strands of jazz artist and classical composer, with his music in both fields influenced by his knowledge of the other. Steve has released four well-received CDs under his own name and contributed to three compilations of Contemporary British Music.
Ed Jones has played with an impressive array of jazz and pop music stars including George Benson, Horace Silver, Chaka Khan, D'Angelo, Herbie Hancock, Omar, Aswad, Tina Turner and Terry Callier, and has been a regular band member in jazz crossover projects such as US3 and Incognito.
Personnel: Ed Jones (saxophone), Steve Plews (piano, keyboards), Gavin Barras (bass), Dave Walsh (drums)
