Baile as Baile is a luminously distinct work that features bassist-composer-arranger Devra Hoff on acoustic double basses and presents a longing lyricism and a centering (meditative, even) sonic embrace. The programmatic range is original compositions inspired by traditional music, and original arrangements of traditional songs. There are additional contributions on two tracks by friends Tara Jane O'Neil (autoharp) and Julia Holter (harmonium).
Devra Hoff has worked in a wide array of cultural contexts and musical settings. She has recorded and toured extensively over three decades on over one hundred recordings and thousands of shows with artists such as Julia Holter, Yoko Ono, Sharon Van Etten/Attachment Theory, Sean Ono Lennon, Nels Cline/Singers, Vijay Iyer, Cibo Matto, Mike Watt, Ches Smith, and many more.
Devra's own records include Solo Bass (named by avant-pop icon Laurie Anderson as one of her top 5 favorite records of all time), Voices From the Empty Moor (Song of Anne Briggs), and Mendoza/Hoff Revels' punk/jazz debut Echolocation- chosen among "Best Jazz Albums of 2023" by both NPR and The New York Times.
As Hoff writes in the liner notes of this work: "The music reflects a search for an elusive sense of home, for belonging that transcends place or scene, and the eventual realization that this 'home' must be found, or built, within oneself."
Baile as Baile is a priceless gem and is available as a deluxe 6-panel digipak printed on reverse board, with liner notes and photos by Devra Hoff. Limited edition pressing of 500 units.
