  • Description

When Alec Dankworth stepped out in front of his eponymous trio at London's 606 Club it was not so much a rite of musical passage as a coming of artistic age.
After two decades supporting some of the greats in the jazz canon, it was the first time the double bassist (twice voted British Jazz Award basist of the year) had led his own ensemble on stage.
With two equally highly regarded musicians, Julian Arguelles (saxophones) and Phil Robson (guitar), Dankworth has here produced a melliflous selection of tunes.
Ten out of the 14 tracks are his own compositions, inspired by diverse sources, from paintings and poems to a wry reference to the bass line of a Sting tune.
Of the other four he pays tribute to two of the jazz pianists he was worked with in the past, with Abdullah Ibrahim's "Msunduza" and Dave Brubeck's "The Duke", which of course is a tribute itself to Duke Ellington.
