  • Description

Traders bubbles with the chemistry created by mingling song and fiddle traditions from Juldeh Camara's Fulani heritage with Griselda Sanderson's Scottish jigs and reels.

Traders is the debut album from Julaba Kunda, an exciting new collaboration between Juldeh Camara and Griselda Sanderson, two outstanding traditional fiddle players with their roots 3,000 miles apart. Traders bubbles with the chemistry between Juldeh's magical one-stringed riti and stunning vocal performances and Griselda's fiddle with the ethereal sounds of the Swedish nyckelharpa. Juldeh, acknowledged worldwide as one of the finest Fula musicians of his time, has already won awards for his collaborative work, most recently with Justin Adams. Griselda's 2009 solo album Harpaphonics was listed in the top 10 best world music releases of that year by the Sunday Times. Together on Traders the pair have created a unique soundscape, all the more intriguing for the quality of the string-laden arrangements, spontaneous vocal performances and unusual recording locations (a village church for one). The thirteen wonderfully atmospheric pieces are evocative of the weddings, dances, work songs and celebrations from their diverse musical cultures. Above all the playing of these two remarkable musicians resonates with echoes of the voices, laughter and footsteps that still exist in the longstanding oral traditions of their people, from the nomadic Fulani herders of the Sahel to the jigs and reels of Scottish dancehalls.
