Description
Just months away from making their world-changing appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show, The Beatles were leading the European stage of the British Invasion. As a pre-fame unit, they'd cut their teeth in the nightclubs of Hamburg, Germany, but in October 1963, on the verge of releasing their second album, the group travelled to Sweden for a short tour which saw them make two memorable appearances on local radio and television.
With the first waves of Beatlemania already being felt across Scandinavia, a short sight-seeing trip was disrupted when hundreds of fans swamped the group in Stockholm, ahead of their 24 October appearance on Pop '63, Swedish National Radio's flagship pop-music show. Suitably recovered, the group raced through seven songs which made clear what all the fuss was about, among them From Me To You, I Saw Her Standing There and a typically throat-shredding version of Twist And Shout.
A week later, on 30 October, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr rounded off their Swedish jaunt with TV appearance on the Sveriges Television music show Drop In. Having originally planned to play just two songs, She Loves You and Twist And Shout, the group ended up delivering a four-song set that blared over the show's ending theme tune, leaving their Swedish fans worn out yet still desperate for more.
