Description
With the 12 SONATE DA CHIESA, Robert M. Helmschrott presents a key work from his oeuvre. Composed between 1984 and 1994, the cycle is much more than a return to the Baroque church sonata: it is a contemporary reflection on spirituality, tradition and cultural identity in the Mediterranean region. All sonatas follow the two-part form slow-fast. The meditative opening movements open up contemplative sound spaces, while the lively finales range from dance-like energy to jubilant ecstasy. The concertante interplay between the organ and alternating melodic instruments gives rise to dialogues, contrasts and suspenseful monologues. The twelve sonatas are arranged in four groups of three; the concluding Sonata XII increases the instrumentation to seven instruments and forms the tonal climax of the cycle. In the twelfth sonata, Helmschrott integrates passages from Orlando di Lasso's motet Timor et tremor. From existential turmoil, the path leads to a confessional 'Non confundar' in radiant fortissimo - a musical sign of hope.
