  • Description

Chris Connor was among the most celebrated female jazz vocalists in the 1950s. Her interpretations of ballads, on which she frequently altered the rhythm in unusual ways, were truly unique. Billboardreported in 1955 that Connor's first two solo 10-inch albums, Sings Lullabys of Birdland and Sings Lullabys for Lovers(the latter featured here), ranked No. 1 and No. 2 on the jazz chart for the week ending April 23, 1955.

The aforementioned 10-inch album is complemented here with nine George Gershwin balladstaken from a brilliant series of 1957 sessions, on which she is backed by such jazz luminaries as Milt Jackson, Herbie Mann, Joe Newman, Oscar Pettiford, and Mundell Lowe, among many others.

    Chris Connor, vocals, with:

    Ralph Sharon (p, arr),

    Oscar Pettiford (b),

    Milt Jackson (vib),

    Mundell Lowe (g),
