The essence of a school of music is represented here both by the composers and educators Eugen Werner Velte and Wolfgang Rihm and the institution’s alumni. The principal function of the University of Music Karlsruhe is as a centre for studies; secondly, a place for individual composition and pedagogy. The Karlsruhe School in no way represents a forced stylistic expression. For 50 years, the University of Music Karlsruhe has radiated a far-reaching artistic liberty. Ideals of musical freedom and openness continue to resound In the music of Wolfgang Rihm’s students. Jörg Widmann, Rebecca Saunders and Markus Hechtle, among others, contribute to the further development of the unique Karlsruhe School from their professional bases.
