Description
Community Service is not the tape PS Hitsquad planned to make, but it's the best drill tape you'll hear all year.
Lyrically it tells the story of a young man grappling with his ambitions; weighing his potential against his life in the trap, flickering between resigned melancholy, swaggering menace and cackling black humour. Features come from fellow Zone 2 general Kwengface (fresh from his own gamechanging album The Memoir), 410's South London drill pioneer AM, viral bashment/ drill sensation Cristale- possibly the greatest female rapper in the UK today - and Peckham road rap legend Tiny Boost. From the opener, Phone Intro's crackling poetry spat over the prison line, it's clear this isn't a typical project. It takes in everything from the rowdiest of club bangers - tracks such as WAP, a slice of cartoon mayhem that sees PS playing with the hook made famous by Cardi B and Meg Thee Stallion to offer something far wilder, or the icy threat of Up It, 3 minutes of pure threat and jittering sonics, but also finds time for the delicate, Shilo Dynasty sampling Streetlife where P notes (in vein) 'pray that I make it home', or the slower tempo rap of Jeden Tag where PS dissects the role of a street general. The features are chosen with precision. On Rah PS goes back to back with Cristale over a bass heavy beat that lies somewhere between dubstep and drill, Woosh sees the collaboration Drill fans have been calling for since 2017; AM and PS, often considered the two best lyricists in the scene flowing with ease over Sapphire's deep string driven production, and Pop 2 is an all star Peckham affair with PS, Kwengface and Tiny Boost going bar for bar in an explosive drill anthem that harks back to the rawness of the genre's early days.
Beats come from drill's sonic pioneers; multi-platinum producers such as Gotcha (the man behind Russ and Tion Wayne's chart topper Body), Bkay (Digga D, Unknown T, AJ Tracey), Parked Up, Sapphire Beatz and Kid Spyral, whilst mixing duties come from drill stalwarts Tweeko and Scratch. The end result is a project that gives the raw unfiltered sound of UK Drill at its creative peak; the pioneers of a genre that has gone to conquer the world showing just how it's done.
