  • Description

Trad was Britain's homegrown style of Jazz which was a mixture of New Orleans, Classic Jazz and Dixieland. Humphrey Lyttelton was its first hero. From tentative beginnings the Jazz Revival as it would become known was beginning to gather pace and Lyttelton formed his first band in 1948.

Some early recordings emerged on the small specialist Esquire record label, but by the end of 1949 the band had a recording contract with the major Parlophone label. In 1950 the band's record producer was the now famous George Martin. By 1953 Lyttelton had published his autobiography much like today's Pop stars. It was the first band to have a Jazz record in the charts, 'Bad Penny Blues' (the piano intro was the inspiration for the Beatles' 'Lady Madonna'). In the early 1950s Lyttelton's band had no serious rivals until Chris Barber's band came along in 1954.

This CD is made up broadcasts, private recordings and alternative takes from the early period and most have never been released before.
