Description
When Nic Jones sang three songs with his son Joe at Sidmouth Folk Festival in 2010, it had been nearly 30 years since he had performed on a stage. This appearance marked the end of a long and difficult journey that began with a near-fatal car crash on the way home from a gig in 1982, but was also the beginning of a new chapter in Nic's career, leading to more concerts, songwriting and, in 2013, the accolade of Folk Singer of the Year at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.
Up to 1980, Nic had been performing solo and as an accompanist, developing a highly individualistic guitar-playing style and creating a body of work that marked him out as one of the most outstanding acts on the folk scene. His 1980 album for Topic, 'Penguin Eggs', showed Nic pushing the boundaries of what folk music could do – it became a critical crossover success, lauded in the rock press as well as the folk journals and, despite only reaching number 71 in the album charts, it is now revered as one of the greatest albums of all time.
This stunning, award-winning documentary, narrated by Cerys Matthews, tells Nic's story through a combination of interviews with Nic himself, his family, collaborators and admirers, archive and newly-shot footage, and special performances of his music by contemporary artists inspired by Nic - Anais Mitchell, Sam Carter, Jim Moray, Eliza Carthy and Blair Dunlop.
This DVD release also exclusively presents the full performances of songs highlighted in the documentary:
The Nic Jones Trio: Master Kilby, Rue The Day, I Only Spoke Portugeses
Eliza Carthy: 10,000 Miles
Blair Dunlop: Canadee-I-O
Jim Moray: Billy Don't You Weep For Me
Pete Coe: Monday Morning, Astley's Ride/ Up And Away
